Cathedral’s Mandarin Presentation

By: Matthew Rivera, Managing Editor

The Mandarin Class of Cathedral High School had a performance that was meant to show off Chinese culture and language ONLY. Although having traditional Chinese dances, it also involved pop music from Korea, creating an unexpected, but very energetic presentation for the audience.

One of the more twisting moments during the Mandarin Presentation was the performance of the Korean song, ‘Scenario.’ This song was popularized from Fortnite and although it has nothing to do with Chinese culture, it was exciting to watch and it had many of the people present joyful, cheering, and some even singing along!

Juniors and others sang a Chinese song for part of the presentation, showing off how much they have learned in Mandarin Class and showing the enthusiasm they have had studying Mandarin. Other performances other than this involved the freshman singing another popular Korean song, ‘Super Idol.’ This song became very popular on TikTok and it showed its popularity by making the crowd laugh and applaud.

The traditional Chinese Dragon Dance performed by Cathedral students!

The most traditional performance out of this whole presentation was the sophomore class’s traditional Chinese Dragon Dance. The Dragon Dance was also accompanied by drums, giving more and more energy with each strike that hit the drum. This plus the colorful dragon helped to finalize the Chinese presentation and give Cathedral High School a presentation to remember.

One of the performers, Junior Rafa Sifuentes, told us about his experience being a part of the presentation, “It was something, that is for sure. It wasn’t all traditional, but being able to all perform together made it something fun and it showed off how much we love this class.”

Overall, this event was able to show Chinese culture and celebrate its traditions. Better than that, the Mandarin class was able to mix this with modern influence, giving the Mandarin class something fun to present, and ultimately giving the audience something entertaining and memorable for the night.
